The Drive My Life programme is a long-standing initiative that brings Central Otago REAPs values to life, breaking down barriers to driver licensing and unlocking pathways to independence, education, and employment.
Breaking Barriers, Creating Opportunities
In 2024, Central Otago REAP introduced a new enrolment process designed to better match mentors with learners, prioritising those facing the greatest challenges. By providing free, accessible, and structured theory and practical driving lessons along with suitable vehicles, mentor support for all tests, and covering associated costs the programme empowers learners to gain their licences and, in turn, create brighter futures for themselves and their whānau.
But Drive My Life isn’t just about driving it’s about building confidence, fostering independence, and strengthening connections.
A Life-Changing Journey
One determined participant from a small rural community enrolled in the programme with the goal of gaining their Restricted Driver Licence. With a full-time job and limited transport options, they needed lessons outside of normal working hours. Central Otago REAP accommodated their needs, matching them with a mentor who could provide support at a time that worked for them.
The mentor provided clear strategies and written notes after each session, but it soon became evident that the learner had low literacy and numeracy levels a challenge they had long masked. Recognising this, the REAP team provided additional support, ensuring the learner could confidently navigate the process. With perseverance and guidance, they successfully earned their Restricted Driver Licence.
New Roads, New Possibilities
Achieving this milestone transformed their life. With a licence in hand, they could now drive independently to adult literacy classes in Alexandra, apply for better-paying jobs, and take pride in achieving a personal goal before their Learner Licence expired.
Real Impact, Real Change
A quote from the Drive My Life Coordinator captures the essence of the programme:
One participant had been relying on friends and whānau for transport, which limited their ability to work. With their new licence, they now have stable employment and can independently support their family.
Drive My Life is about more than just passing a test its about transforming lives, empowering whānau, and strengthening communities. By removing barriers to driver licensing, Central Otago REAP is opening doors to greater opportunities, financial independence, and a brighter future for those who need it most.
