Southern REAP NCEA4U: Empowering Young Mums to Achieve Their Goals

In the Winton and Gore areas, a group of young mothers faced a significant barrier to their future: they had left school without achieving the NCEA qualifications needed for career advancement or higher education. Many were solo parents on a Work and Income benefit, while others were working minimum-wage jobs. Despite these challenges, they were highly motivated to further their education and create better opportunities for themselves and their children.

Recognising their determination, Southern REAP stepped in to understand their needs, aspirations, and the obstacles standing in their way. One of the biggest challenges many of these young mums had was limited access to childcare, making it difficult to commit to traditional study programmes.

A Flexible Learning Solution

To bridge this gap, Southern REAP developed NCEA4U, a flexible and supportive programme designed to help young mothers gain their NCEA qualifications while exploring pathways into further education or employment. Understanding that rigid schedules wouldn’t work for these participants, the programme was designed to allow attendance at times that suited their individual circumstances.

In addition, Southern REAP established a nearby childcare facility staffed by a qualified early childhood educator. This critical support enabled mothers to focus on their studies, knowing their children were in a safe and nurturing environment. By removing this major barrier, more young mums were able to engage with the programme and work towards their goals.

Learning Through Real-Life Contexts

NCEA4U takes a hands-on, practical approach to learning. Participants work through the literacy and numeracy requirements needed for NCEA certification using familiar, real-life contexts. Southern REAP partnered with Te Kura Correspondence School to ensure that all participants could gain the necessary credits and move forward with their educational journey.

The results? Increased confidence, a newfound belief in their abilities, and most importantly tangible success. For many, this was the first time they had experienced a positive learning environment and achieved academic success.

Changing Lives: A Success Story

The impact of NCEA4U extends far beyond the classroom. One inspiring example is a young mum of three who joined the programme without a specific career goals. She simply wanted to set a positive example for her children by completing her NCEA.

During an NCEA4U session, a local career consultant introduced the group to various career and employment possibilities. This session sparked something unexpected in her: an interest in Early Childhood Education. Initially hesitant, she explored the idea further with encouragement from the Southern REAP team.

She began volunteering at her eldest child’s kindergarten and was soon offered a role as the coordinator and support teacher for Bush Kindy. Now, she is pursuing higher-level studies in Early Childhood Education and loving every moment of it. From starting the programme with no formal qualifications to working towards a rewarding career, her journey is a testament to the transformative power of education.

A Brighter Future

Southern REAPs NCEA4U programme is not just about earning qualifications its about empowering young mothers to build a future filled with opportunities. By providing a flexible learning environment, essential childcare support, and personalised career guidance, Southern REAP is helping young women take control of their lives and achieve their dreams.

For many, NCEA4U is more than an educational programme, it’s a stepping stone to a brighter, more fulfilling future.
